The temperature in Antigua averages 75 degrees in winter to 85 degrees in the summer. Average annual rainfall in Antigua is only 45 inches, making it the sunniest island in the Eastern Caribbean. Antigua was named by Christopher Columbus after a church in Spain, Santa Maria La Antigua. Antigua means “ancient” in Spanish.
Antigua culture is predominantly influenced by the British who controlled the island until 1981. The British influence is evident throughout the island. Cricket is the islands national sport, but football, boat racing and surfing are also popular. Antigua’s Sailing week attracts locals, visitors and sailors from all over the world.
Antigua’s Carnival held each year in August commemorates the abolition of slavery in Antigua and the British West Indies. The annual Antigua Carnival is a notable attraction for tourists who come to see the numerous pageants, music, contests, shows, and other festive activities.
