Jamaica is a land of rich cultural heritage, due mostly, to a unique blend of the many different races which make up the Jamaican people. Today African and European influences dominate the culture; however, the Spanish, Irish, Indians, Chinese and Germans have all left their mark as well. The Jamaican people are famous for their warm, friendly, curious nature, and are always willing to share their love for Jamaica and it’s culture with travelers.

Jamaica is an Island nation of the Greater Antilles. The island of Jamaica is approximately 145 miles in length and as much as 50 miles across. Jamaica is located in the Caribbean roughly 90 miles south of Cuba and to the west of Haiti & the Dominican Republic.
Jamaican Culture
Jamaica’s cultural diversity is very apparent in the various foods served on the island. From simple dishes like cornmeal porridge, to curried goat and oxtail, there is something for everyone in Jamaica. Sea foods are naturally a staple as is the famous Jamaican “Jerk”. Jerk not only refers to the spicy sauce which is usually associated with it, but also the means of cooking which usually consists of slow smoking using pimento branches or other fruit woods.
The name Jamaica comes from the indigenous Taino inhabitants, who called the island Xaymaca, which means “Land of Wood and Water”
Music
Jamaica’s rich heritage is alive in it’s music. With both African and European roots, Jamaican music has a unique and infectious beat. Reggae music is Jamaica’s most recognized sound, expressing personal freedom, independence, religion, and gossip. Perhaps the most famous Jamaican musician is Bob Marley, whose influence helped bring Reggae music to main stream throughout the world.
Art in Jamaica
The lush colorful landscapes of Jamaica offer inspiration to its people. Vibrant colors are reflected in all the visual arts. Jamaican artists produce some of the best paintings and sculptures in the Caribbean. Artistry is so important in the Jamaican culture that one can not help but be immersed in it when traveling there. Local artists abound on every street corner and in the craft fares and markets, selling a number of locally produced treasures.
