With only 197 rooms Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort and Private Island is a small Caribbean All Inclusive Resort with a lot of features and excellent service.
Beaches at Sandals Royal Caribbean
History
Originally the Royal Caribbean Hotel, the property was acquired and renamed Sandals Royal Caribbean in 1986 and became the 2nd Resort in the Sandals Chain. Two years after the resort opened, Sandals Royal Caribbean, along with almost every other resort on Jamaica’s north coast, was destroyed by Hurricane Gilbert in 1986. Miraculously thanks to the dedicated staff, the Resort reopened better then ever, exactly 3 months later.
My first impression of this Resort, on our first visit way back in the mid 90’s, was rather disappointing. I can remember a few things that really caught our attention. Probably the biggest was the quality of the sand on the beach. It was more like crushed coral and very hard on the feet. The other was the atmosphere at the resort. Being a young couple we were used to the more upbeat atmosphere at some of the more lively resorts like Sandals Montego Bay, or Dunns River. The Royal Caribbean was known as being a more relaxed, quiet resort frequented by large numbers of British Vacationers. Very peaceful and quiet if you like that sort of atmosphere.

However, we were pleasantly surprised on our last visit in January 2009 at the changes that have taken place at this Resort. The Resort has recently undergone a massive renovation including new restaurants, refurbished rooms and suites, new pools, a better beach.
Sandals has certainly changed our minds about this resort, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay in the Montego Bay Area. Read through the other pages below for more detailed information.
Airport Information
Sangster Internation Airport in Montego Bay has just been completely redone, and Sandals has a new private lounge, so sit back relax and have a Red Stripe while you wait for your shuttle bus. Sandals Montego Bay is a 15 minute bus ride from the airport. The airport now offers a very comfortable experience with even more Dining and Duty Free Shopping. Most planes now depart from the new terminal. FYI – Now you can relax in comfort at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Restaurant while you wait for your departing flight. Clip the coupon form the menu for a free margarita on your next visit.
Sandals Royal Caribbean also provides free courtesy shuttles to and from Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Inn. So you can stay at one and play at all three.
